It’s estimated that over 40 percent of employees are working remotely right now, according to the online freelancing website Upwork. More than a quarter of workers will probably be working from home through 2021. Peter Schieffelin Nyberg says that it’s vital for employees to develop the appropriate skills and facilities while working from home.

“I recommend employees stick to a uniform schedule,” Peter Schieffelin Nyberg says. “Some bosses are more flexible now in terms of when you check in and check out. Build a schedule that suits your needs, say sleeping in an hour later, but also working an hour later. But stick to the schedule.”

Another thing that can help remote workers is practicing with the technologies at their disposal. Some employees are struggling with video conferencing, messaging software, and other digital tools.

“It often takes some effort to learn new tech tools, but practice makes perfect,” Peter Schieffelin Nyberg suggests.

Finally, you need to set up space at home that’s conducive to work.

“If possible,” Peter Schieffelin Nyberg says, “you should set up a dedicated office or space, perhaps in your dining room or a spare bedroom, that’s dedicated to working. This will help you stay focused. Remove distractions like the TV.”
